The westslope cutthroat trout is a cutthroat trout subspecies and is officially designated as Montana’s state fish. The historic range of the westslope cutthroat is the most geographically widespread of the 14 subspecies of inland cutthroat trout. Genetically pure westslope cutthroat trout have been extirpated throughout much of their native range. “Of all the trout in North America, cutthroats are some of the most at-risk, largely due to the introduction of nonnative fishes like brook and brown trout, climate change and habitat degredation.” says Karen, who is midway through a project to illustrate all of the cutthroat trout subpspecies in the United States.
