The greenback cutthroat trout is the easternmost cutthroat trout subspecies in the US. Once believed to be extinct, remnant populations were discovered in the 1950s, and intensive conservation efforts were undertaken. There is still debate about the genetic purity of certain lines of “greenbacks,” but the subspecies was downlisted to “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. “Of all the trout in North America, cutthroats are some of the most at-risk, largely due to climate change,” says Karen, who is midway through a project to illustrate all of the cutthroat trout subpspecies in the United States.
