The Eastern bluebird is the only bluebird species to regularly show up here in Maine, and when they begin to arrive, you know summer is not far away! In Maine, Eastern bluebirds often have two broods, and the young from the second brood will often stay with the parents throughout the winter in their southern non-breeding range. While a 2000-mile migration between northern breeding grounds and winter non-breeding habitat is remarkable, the species' journey to recovery is even more incredible to me. In the first half of the twentieth century, Eastern bluebird populations plummeted in North America secondary to competition with invasive species like sparrows and European starlings. Thanks to a massive, largely volunteer, effort that included a massive bluebird box campaign, the Eastern bluebird has come back from the brink.
