Chasing Shadows by Greg Skomal with Ret Talbot & Illustrations by Karen Talbot
Chasing Shadows: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Great White Shark is the story of the resurgence of the white shark population in the western North Atlantic seen through the eyes of Greg Skomal, the shark biologist who quite unexpectedly found himself in the middle of it. Karen's husband, science writer Ret Talbot, collaborated with Greg to bring to life this remarkable conservation story about restoring an apex predator to an ecosystem. Karen's art can be found throughout the book, as spot illustrations for each chapter head, a scientific illustration of a white shark, maps, and illustrations of three lighthouses that represent the geography of the narrative. The paperback edition was released in 2024 and is updated to include an addendum detailing the population study that published after the hardcover edition published in July of 2023.
